Flexibility. Convenience. Affordability. Just three of the reasons to call Michigan State University Apartments home. Shopping for an apartment that you can enjoy AND afford? Your dollar will go further here. We provide a far greater number of support services than anyone else in the area.  In addition, you'll live in an environment that supports your academic or professional pursuits.  You won't find a more convenient location than on campus.

Families have first priority when it comes to assignments, followed by Graduate Students, then Undergraduate Students. We will try to assign you to an apartment based on your preferences if possible. Although we do our best to honor housing requests, submission of an application does NOT guarantee that you will be assigned an apartment.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

for Students, Faculty and Staff

Eligibility for family-student housing requires that you be married and be accompanied by your spouse, or be a single parent with legal custody of your children as verified by appropriate documents. You may also apply for family-student housing if you plan to get married prior to the date by which you desire housing. Applicants must provide marriage certificates and birth certificates for each of their children prior to signing leases.

Single-student housing eligibility requires that you be either unmarried or married without being accompanied by your spouse or children.  Residents of single-student housing, whose spouses and/or children arrive at campus at some later date, must notify the University Apartments Office of this change in their eligibility status.

Faculty/staff housing eligibility requires that you be a full-time employee of the University. Eligible faculty/staff employees include full-time professors, associate professors, assistant professors, instructors, visiting scholars, post-doctoral scholars, and support staff belonging to the APA, APSA, or FOP bargaining groups. Members of the other University bargaining groups are not eligible for faculty/staff housing without special permission from University Apartments.

Faculty/staff tenants are limited to a maximum residency of three years.  The faculty/staff employee, his/her domestic partner, spouse and/or dependents may occupy faculty/staff apartments.  Presentation of marriage certificates, birth certificates or legal custody documents will be required before leases may be signed.  Faculty/staff members receiving remuneration from the University's payroll system are required to sign authorization cards for automatic payroll deduction of their monthly rent payments.

If a family-housing faculty/staff resident is married and his/her spouse is residing in the apartment, the spouse must also sign the lease and thereby assume joint and several (individual and collective) liability for the lease's obligations.  If the spouse is not present at the time of initial occupancy, documentation (e.g., airline tickets) that the spouse will arrive within two weeks to permanently occupy the apartment will be required to obtain occupancy, unless special written approval has been obtained from the University Apartments Office.  Dependent family members must reside in the apartment throughout the term of the lease for the resident to maintain eligibility for family-student housing or faculty/staff housing.

Graduate students must be enrolled in a degree-granting program for two out of the three full semesters during the academic year and must either be enrolled for a minimum of four credit hours per semester or be actively engaged in the research and writing of a thesis/dissertation, fellowship or internship as verified in writing by the Chair of their academic department.

Undergraduate students must be enrolled in a degree-granting academic program for two out of three full semesters (fall, spring, or summer) during the academic year and must be registered for a minimum of eight credit hours per semester.  Students enrolled in Lifelong Education program courses are not eligible for housing without special approval from the University Apartments Office.

Residents must maintain eligibility for housing throughout the duration of their leases and must notify the University Apartments Office in writing of any change in their status that would affect eligibility. Residents whose eligibility terminates during the term of their leases must vacate their apartments within thirty (30) days of the loss of their eligibility. Failure to do so will result in the initiation of legal eviction proceedings.

Residents must meet requirements of each group to which they belong. For example, if an undergraduate wished to get married and apply for an apartment, this student must meet the requirements for both family-student and undergraduate eligibility.
